Best Cargo Storage by Vehicle

A cargo loadout is only as good as how it fits your machine. The right trunk for a Pro R isn’t the right trunk for a Maverick R, and a Defender utility build wants a different rack than a Ranger XP. Jump to your platform and skip the guesswork.

Polaris RZR Pro R

The 225-hp ProStar Fury Pro R has the chassis to carry premium cargo — and the sticker price to justify a hard trunk over a soft bag. Pro R also wears the 5x114.3 Polaris outlier bolt pattern, but cargo gear bolts to the bed and cage, so fitment is about cab and bed dimensions, not wheel hubs. Build the loadout: trunk for security, door bags for in-cab grabs, Packout for the toolbox you already own.

Polaris RZR Turbo R

The Turbo R shares its rear-bed geometry with the Pro XP, so most premium hard cargo cross-fits between the two. Where the Turbo R is unique is door layout — thinner door cards mean a Pro R / Pro XP / Turbo R-fit Tusk upper door bag drops in cleanly across all three. Build for desert: cargo above the spare, door bags in the cab, drink cooler latched down.

The deepest cargo catalog on the Can-Am side. X3-specific door bags, bed storage, and racks are easy to find at every price tier. Can-Am Maverick R

Maverick R is the newest sport platform from BRP, and it uses a 6x139.7 hub pattern that doesn’t cross-fit with any other UTV — that’s a wheel thing, not a cargo thing, but it’s a reminder that this is a clean-sheet chassis. Cargo gear here is purpose-built Maverick R-only, and DRT and PRP are the brands to know.

Polaris Ranger XP 1000

The Ranger XP 1000 is a utility platform, so cargo strategy flips: the bed itself IS the cargo solution, and you’re adding organization (bed boxes, racks) instead of fundamentally moving more stuff. Tusk leads the value tier here for everyday utility, Kolpin has a universal overbed rack for jobs that need the bed flat.

Four Things We Test For

Cargo gear lives outside. Pressure washers, dust, water crossings, vibration at speed — everything that fails on cheap aftermarket parts. These are the four factors that separate ‘close enough’ from gear that’s still working three seasons later.

01

Weather Sealing

Hard trunks need lockable lids and gas struts; soft bags need vinyl-coated nylon and rubber zippers; bed boxes need IP-rated lid seals. Anything that lives outdoors year-round has to take rain, mud, and pressure-washer recovery.

What to look for: Look for IP67 ratings on bed boxes, gas-strut lids on hard trunks, and marine vinyl or coated nylon on door bags.

02

Fitment Specificity

A bed box built for the Defender bolts into factory clip points; a Maverick R trunk hugs the 2-door cab cutout. Universal cargo gear works, but vehicle-specific cargo gear is the difference between ‘close enough’ and factory.

What to look for: Check whether the SKU lists your exact model and trim year — HD8 vs HD10, MAX vs base, single-row vs 4-door.

03

Security & Theft Deterrent

If your machine sits at the trailhead while you’re out on a hike or in a hotel parking lot overnight, lockability matters. Hard trunks with hasps and Packout puck systems lock your gear; soft bags don’t.

What to look for: Premium hard trunks ship with hasp cutouts; AJK Packout mounts use a puck system to lock the box to the mount.

04

Modular vs Dedicated

Modular Milwaukee Packout systems let you carry the same tool boxes between truck bed, garage, and UTV. Dedicated cargo (trunks, bed boxes) stays with the machine. Pick based on whether your kit moves around or lives on the rig.

What to look for: Modular = AJK / CA Tech USA Packout mounts. Dedicated = DRT trunks, Kemimoto storage boxes, Tusk bed boxes.

Cargo Storage, Honestly Answered

Hard trunk vs soft bag — which one is right?

Hard trunks (DRT-style aluminum) lock your cargo and stay rigid under load — the right call if you carry valuable gear, recovery tools, or anything you can’t replace at a trailhead. Soft bags (SDR, PRP) weigh half as much, take impacts without denting, and are repairable in the field. If your loadout is clothing, snacks, and a recovery rope, soft is fine. If it’s a tool kit and electronics, go hard.

Is Milwaukee Packout actually worth it on a UTV?

Yes — if you already own Packout boxes. The math works because the boxes follow you between truck bed, garage shelf, and UTV deck. AJK and CA Tech USA make platform-specific mounts that bolt to existing RZR / X3 / Talon hardware. If you’re starting from zero, dedicated cargo (trunks, bed boxes) is usually cheaper per cubic foot. If you’re already in the Milwaukee ecosystem, this is the cleanest way to mount what you have.

What’s the best UTV roof bag?

Roof bags are platform-specific — Kemimoto makes vehicle-fit roof bags for the Maverick Trail, RZR XP 1000, and CFMoto ZForce. Look for waterproof 1680D nylon, secure roll-top closures, and a footprint that matches your roof contour without blocking your light bar mount. Stack only weather-resistant cargo on the roof; anything fragile lives in the trunk.

Are door bags fitment-specific?

Yes — door bags Velcro and clip to the inside of the stock door card, so they have to match your door geometry. PRP makes the deepest fitment library — X3, Maverick R, Pro XP, Pro R, Turbo R, KRX, Talon, RMAX — with cuts and Velcro layouts specific to each. Tusk and DRT also build pro-series sets that cross-fit the RZR Pro family.

How much can a Polaris RZR Pro XP carry?

The Pro XP has a published rear cargo box capacity and a tongue-tow rating from Polaris — the specific numbers vary by trim year, so always verify against your model year’s owner’s manual or Polaris.com specs page before loading heavy gear. As a rule of thumb: a DRT aluminum trunk loaded with a tool roll, recovery kit, and gas can lives well inside any factory cargo rating. Don’t pile a cooler full of ice plus a spare tire plus a tool tower on the rack and expect the suspension to stay happy.

Waterproof cargo solutions — what really works?

For full submersion: IP67-rated bed boxes (Kemimoto Defender 20L, Savage UTV waterproof case). For rain and mud: roll-top dry bags (DRT, BOXO, Kemimoto roof bags) and gas-strut hard trunks with sealed lids. Soft door bags resist splashing but aren’t submersion-rated — don’t leave your phone in one through a water crossing.

Best cargo storage for hunting?

Hunting builds want quiet, lockable, vehicle-specific cargo. A Defender bed box plus a rear cabin organizer for the small stuff is the classic loadout. Add a Razorback or RBO overbed rack if you’re running a quad-cab and need to keep the bed itself free for game. For the call-and-binoculars / phone-and-snacks layer, door bags belong in the cabin.

Are Milwaukee Packout mounts theft-resistant?

AJK Packout mounts include an optional puck-lock system that bolts the box to the mount — combined with the Packout box’s own latch lock, that’s a two-stage theft deterrent. Not safe-grade, but a meaningful jump above ‘Velcro and hope.’ The puck lock is a separate SKU on most kits.

What’s the best storage for a Maverick X3?

The X3 has the deepest cargo catalog in the segment. SDR’s X3 rear bed storage bag is the value premium pick; PRP X3 front door bags are the cabin standard; Geiser’s Maverick X3 cargo rack is the race-pedigree option for spare-tire-plus-cooler builds.

Roof rack vs roof bag — which goes first?

Roof bags are the entry tier — bolt-free, vehicle-fit, soft. Roof racks are the next step up — rigid platforms that mount a spare or fuel above the bed. Most builders run a bag first (cheap, fast, reversible), then add a rack later when the bag isn’t enough. They can coexist if the rack has a flat upper platform.

Build the loadout that actually fits

A hard trunk for security. A bed box for weather-rated tote storage. Door bags for the cabin. Packout for the toolbox you already own. We carry every brand on this page and ship same day on most fitments.
