Lift Type Match

Bracket, spring-spacer, suspension/spring, and portal-gear lifts solve different problems. The right pick depends on tire size, ride character, and whether you want to preserve factory geometry.

Rule of thumb: Up to 3" lift & 31" tires → spacer or bracket. Up to 5" & 35" tires → spring or full suspension. 35"+ tires & geometry preservation → portal gear.

Tire Clearance Honesty

Every "X inch lift = Y inch tire" claim on this page traces to the manufacturer's product page, not a guess. If a lift is advertised for a tire size, the manufacturer published that number.

Cross-check: Tire size at full compression and full turn varies with wheel offset, actual tire diameter, and trim plastics.

Geometry & Axle Impact

Bracket and spring lifts steepen CV joint angles, which stresses axles under hard load. Portal lifts sidestep this by moving the lift into the wheel hub, preserving factory A-arms, tie rods, and axles.

Stock CV joints typically max out around 20-22 degrees of angle. Lifting past 3" without geometry correction is where most early CV failures originate.

UTV Lift Kit Questions

The questions buyers actually ask before pulling the trigger on a lift kit.

What's the difference between a bracket lift and a suspension lift?

A bracket lift relocates your shock mounting points upward, raising the chassis without changing factory suspension travel. They're affordable and bolt on quickly. A suspension or spring lift replaces or modifies actual suspension components (longer springs, new shock mounts), which gives a larger lift — usually 3"+ — and may require companion parts like longer A-arms or tie rods to keep steering geometry honest. Spring-spacer lifts are a sub-category of suspension lift that simply stack a spacer on top of the factory spring.

Will a UTV lift kit void my Polaris or Can-Am factory warranty?

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your entire warranty simply because you installed an aftermarket part. But a dealer can still deny coverage on a specific failure if they can argue the modification contributed to it — for example, an axle or CV joint failure on a lifted machine. Polaris's own help center explicitly notes that aftermarket modifications may affect coverage on a case-by-case basis. Bottom line: a small bracket lift is unlikely to trigger trouble, but big-lift / monster-tire builds typically forfeit coverage on drivetrain and suspension claims.

Do I need longer axles or A-arms with a lift kit?

For lifts in the 2"-3" range with stock-size tires, generally no. As you increase lift height past 3" or upsize tires beyond what the lift was designed for, CV joint angles steepen and you start exceeding what factory axles tolerate under hard acceleration. Most 4"+ bracket and suspension lifts ship with or recommend heavy-duty axles. Portal gear lifts don't have this problem — they preserve factory suspension geometry.

What is a portal gear lift, and is it worth $4,000+?

A portal gear lift places both the lift and a gear reduction inside the wheel hub. The benefit is two-fold: you get 4"-6" of lift without touching your factory A-arms, tie rods, or axles, AND the gear reduction (typically 15% or 30%) lowers final drive ratio so your engine works less to turn big tires. The downside is cost and weight. If you're committed to 35"+ tires and want to keep your machine reliable, portal lifts are the most expensive option that doesn't compromise. For weekend builds running 30" tires, a $300 bracket lift gets you 80% of the result.

How much tire clearance does a 3" lift kit actually add?

It varies sharply by machine. The same SuperATV 3" lift kit gives you up to 29.5" tires on a 64" X3, 32" tires on a 72" X3, 31" tires on a Pro XP, 32" on a Pro R, and 28.5"-29" on a Ranger XP 1000. Tire clearance depends on wheel well geometry, wheel offset, and actual tire diameter at full compression and full turn. Use the manufacturer's published number for the specific machine, then back off slightly if you run aggressive wheel offsets or compete in deep terrain.

Is there a Maverick R-specific lift kit available?

As of May 2026, we don't stock a Maverick R-specific lift kit in the UTV Source catalog. The Maverick R is Can-Am's newest premium sport platform (2024-2026) and the aftermarket lift catalog for it is still maturing. SuperATV's GDP portal lift catalog now lists Maverick R portal options as well as a 6" portal kit; check the Maverick R vehicle hub for the most current selection.

What's the deal with spring-spacer lifts? Are they safe?

Spring-spacer lifts use an aluminum spacer that sits on top of the factory shock spring, compressing the spring by an inch or two and effectively raising ride height. They're cheap, easy to install, and add little wear if installed correctly. The trade-offs: the ride is slightly firmer because the spring is preloaded more, and very cheap no-name spacers can warp under hard riding. Stick with billet aluminum spacers from a brand that ships a lifetime warranty — SuperATV, High Lifter, ZBroz — and you'll be fine.

How long does a UTV lift kit install take?

A 2"-3" spring-spacer lift is typically a 1-3 hour DIY job. A 3"-5" bracket or spring suspension lift averages 4-8 hours and usually requires a buddy or a shop. Portal gear lifts are 8-15 hours and most owners book the install at a UTV shop — you're disassembling brake systems, swapping in extended brake lines, and bleeding hydraulics.

Can I run my factory wheels with a lift kit?

Bracket and spring-spacer lifts are wheel-agnostic — factory wheels work fine. Portal gear lifts have stricter wheel requirements: you'll need 14" or larger wheels, and the center hole must be at least 3.25" (82.55mm) — or you'll need a 1" wheel spacer. Portal lifts are also incompatible with dual-beadlock wheels.

Why pick Thumper Fab over SuperATV for the Defender?

Both are credible options. Thumper Fab's Defender 3" bracket lift fits Cab / 65" models specifically and ships at a lower price point ($275) versus the SuperATV equivalent ($307+).
