The Four Things That Matter

A skid plate is one of the simpler aftermarket buys on a UTV, but the four decisions below separate a $99 hardpack accent from a $930 race-spec belly armor.

01

Material

UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) flexes, slides, and absorbs without denting. Aluminum is repairable and lighter but louder and prone to bending on hard hits. Hybrid kits exist but cost the most.

Rule of thumb: rock crawling and rock-strewn trails => UHMW. Sport / hardpack / sand => aluminum is fine.

02

Thickness

UHMW skid plates come in 3/16”, 3/8”, and 1/2”. 3/8” is the sweet spot for most riders — durable enough for serious rock crawling, lighter than 1/2”. Reserve 1/2” for race-spec abuse.

Worth knowing: 1/2” usually adds $130-$200 over 3/8” for the same fitment.

03

Coverage

Full belly skids cover engine, transmission, and differential in one piece. A-arm and trailing-arm skids protect the suspension components separately. Sport bumper-mount skids cover the front strike zone only.

Layer it: hard-trail X3 / RZR builds run full belly PLUS A-arm skids.

04

Hardware

Countersunk bolts are mandatory — standard hex heads catch on rocks and shear off. Quality kits re-use some factory mount points; budget kits often require drilling. Check the install notes before checkout.

Drain ports matter: they keep mud and water from pooling on top of the skid.

UHMW · Aluminum · Hybrid · Sport

The four-way decision matrix — which material for which use case.

1/2” UHMW

Premium thickness. Race-spec abuse tolerance. Quiet on rock. Heavier than 3/8” UHMW or aluminum.

Best forRock Crawling / KOH

3/8” UHMW

Sweet spot. Durable for hard rock crawling, lighter and cheaper than 1/2”. The default choice for most riders.

Best forMixed Trail / Hard Use

Aluminum

Lighter and repairable. Louder than UHMW. Bends rather than rebounds. Cheaper for full-belly coverage.

Best forSport / Hardpack / Dunes

Bumper Sport Skid

Front-only aluminum accent that bolts to the OEM bumper. Sub-$100. Pair with a full skid — not a substitute.

Skid Plate Questions, Answered

The ten questions UTV shoppers actually ask before pulling the trigger on a skid plate.

UHMW vs aluminum — which is better for a UTV skid plate?

UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) is the better choice for most riders. It slides over rock instead of getting hung up, returns to shape after impacts instead of denting, and runs much quieter than aluminum. The trade-off is weight (UHMW is heavier) and that it cannot be repaired — if you damage it badly, you replace the kit. Aluminum is lighter, repairable, and usually cheaper per square inch of coverage, but it rattles, dents, and gets hung up on rock more easily. If most of your riding is on hardpack, sand, or groomed trails, aluminum is fine. If you ride rocks, mountains, or rough trails, choose UHMW.

What thickness UHMW skid plate do I need?

3/8” UHMW is the sweet spot for most riders. It holds up to hard rock crawling on its own and weighs less than 1/2”. Step up to 1/2” if you live in granite-strewn riding areas (Moab, KOH country, the Rubicon) or run on race-spec terrain regularly. 3/16” UHMW exists but is intended for light-duty / utility riding — not aggressive trail use.

Do I need a full skid plate or just partial coverage?

A full belly skid covers the engine, transmission, and differential as one continuous panel — this is the right answer if you want true underbody protection. Partial / bumper-mounted sport skids cover the front bumper area only and are best treated as an accent piece, not a substitute. On serious off-road builds (X3, RZR Pro R, Talon), pair the full belly skid with A-arm and trailing-arm skids for full-perimeter coverage of the suspension components.

Will an aftermarket skid plate void my factory warranty?

Installing a properly-mounted skid plate does not automatically void your factory warranty. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, manufacturers cannot void coverage for the entire vehicle just because an aftermarket part is installed — they have to prove the part directly caused the failure. Skid plates that re-use factory mount points and don’t require frame modification are the safest in this regard. If a kit requires drilling or welding to the frame, talk to your dealer first.

Do skid plates affect ground clearance?

Yes, but usually by a smaller amount than people think. UHMW skid plates add 3/8” to 1/2” to the lowest point of the belly, depending on thickness. Aluminum sport plates that bolt to the factory bumper don’t affect belly clearance at all. If you are running a 30”-plus tire on a lifted machine, the clearance loss is negligible. On a stock-suspension machine, plan to clear obstacles you previously cleared by an inch or so with slightly more care — or do the upgrade together with a bracket lift.

Can I install a UTV skid plate myself?

Yes, on most kits. Quality skid plates from SuperATV, Tusk, and Pro Armor re-use most or all of the factory mount points and ship with countersunk hardware. Plan for 1 to 2 hours of garage time and a basic socket / hex wrench set. You will need a floor jack and jack stands — never get under a UTV that is supported only by its OEM jack. If a kit requires drilling new mount holes, the install gets harder and you may want a shop to do it.

What is an A-arm skid plate and do I need one?

An A-arm skid (or trailing-arm skid) is a separate UHMW or aluminum panel that bolts to the lower control arms of your suspension to protect them from rock strikes and brush. Most belly skids cover the engine and transmission but leave the arms exposed. If you ride aggressive rocky terrain or run aftermarket high-clearance arms (HCR, S3 Powersports), A-arm skids are a smart pairing — they protect a $1,000+ pair of arms from damage that a $300 set of skids can prevent. Casual trail riders can skip them.

How much does a full UTV skid plate cost?

Expect to pay between $560 and $930 for a full belly UHMW skid plate on a current sport UTV platform. Tusk’s Quiet-Glide line is the budget end at $560-$770. SuperATV’s ARMW line is the premium 1/2” UHMW end at $735-$930 depending on platform. Smaller utility platforms (Honda Pioneer 520, Polaris RZR 200) are cheaper. 4-seat trims add roughly $150 to the price over 2-seat versions of the same plate.

What hardware comes with an aftermarket skid plate?

Quality kits ship with countersunk button-head or socket-head bolts that sit flush with the surface of the skid — this prevents the heads from catching on rocks and shearing off. Mounting tabs, washers, and Nyloc nuts are usually included. Better kits re-use some factory mount points; budget kits sometimes require new holes drilled in the frame. Read the install notes before checkout. Drain ports for mud and water are a feature worth looking for on UHMW skids.

Are aluminum skid plates really that much louder than UHMW?

Yes, especially on rock and gravel. Aluminum transmits impact noise into the cab through the frame — every rock strike rings the panel like a drum. UHMW absorbs and damps impact instead of transmitting it. On hardpack and sand the difference is small. On rock or gravel terrain the difference is night and day. If you ride with a stereo or just enjoy the natural noise of the machine, the UHMW investment pays off in cab quietness.
