Best UTV Air Filters & Particle Separators

Vehicle-specific picks for Polaris RZR, Can-Am Maverick, Yamaha YXZ, Kawasaki KRX and Honda Talon. Filter + particle-separator combinations that protect the engine in real dust, not just in a brochure.

Best Air Filters by Vehicle

Air filters and particle separators are fitment-specific. A filter for an X3 will not fit a YXZ. The picks below cover the seven platforms where the aftermarket has real depth — tier-labeled so you can decide between premium dust protection, value replacement, or a high-flow upgrade for your actual machine.

Polaris RZR Pro R

The Pro R's 2.0L ProStar Fury naturally-aspirated four-cylinder makes more power and breathes more air than any prior RZR. Owners feel the OEM paper filter as a soft restriction first, then start asking about particle separators when they see how much dust the airbox catches after a single trail day.

Yamaha YXZ 1000R

The Four Things We Evaluated

Air filters are fitment-critical. A filter that doesn't seal in the airbox or a particle separator that doesn't scavenge enough dust will cost you an engine before it costs you a CVT belt. These are the four criteria we ran every product against.

01

Filtration efficiency

The OEM cellulose filter typically catches around 30% of fine dust on the ISO 5011 protocol. Aftermarket synthetic and cotton-gauze designs target 99% and up. We favored picks where the manufacturer publishes the test result rather than vague “up to” copy.

Watch for ISO 5011 numbers or fractional efficiency at 0.3-micron particle size. If neither is published, the claim is marketing.
02

Airflow vs OEM

A high-flow filter that gives up filtration is worse than the OEM paper. The best picks publish actual flow-vs-stock numbers (DynoJet's 9.57% airflow + 30.37% capacity gain is the cleanest example) and pair that with a measurable horsepower or torque claim like EVO's up to 2 HP.

Watch for manufacturer-published flow numbers vs OEM, not lab-only peak airflow.
03

Dust-protection layer

A particle separator like S&B's ejects 94% of dust before it ever reaches the filter. For desert and dune riders, the separator is the single highest-leverage protection upgrade on the machine. For trail-only riders, a simple prefilter wrap is the same idea at a fraction of the cost.

Watch for a documented separation percentage and variable-fan-speed scavenging on premium units.
04

Service interval + cost

Dry synthetic filters wash clean with compressed air and a garden hose. Cotton-gauze filters need to be re-oiled at every service. We favor dry synthetic for owners who'd rather not deal with oil, and only recommend cotton gauze when the platform's aftermarket leaves no synthetic option.

Watch for dry vs oiled media call-outs on the spec sheet. Mixing oil from a cotton-gauze filter into a dry-media airbox will gum up MAF/MAP sensors on some chassis.

Air Filter Questions, Answered

How often should I clean my UTV air filter?

Every 1,000 to 2,000 miles for trail riders. Every 250 to 500 miles for desert, dune, or mud riders. The right interval is whatever it takes to keep the filter from being visibly choked — pull it out monthly during season and look. A particle separator more than doubles those intervals for owners who run dusty terrain.

Is S&B better than K&N for a UTV?

For most UTV buyers we'd steer toward S&B's dry synthetic media over K&N's pre-oiled cotton gauze. Dry media washes clean with shop air; cotton gauze has to be re-oiled at every service. Either works — pick S&B if you want zero oil maintenance, pick K&N if you already own their refresh kit.

Do I need a particle separator if I have a stock filter?

Only if you ride dust regularly — desert, dunes, dry-summer trail. The S&B Particle Separator ejects 94% of dusty air before it touches the filter, which dramatically extends both the filter's service interval and the engine's service life. For mud, snow, or wet-trail riders, the separator is less critical and a prefilter wrap covers the need.

What's the difference between an air filter and a particle separator?

The filter is the primary defense — it catches dust and dirt before the air enters the engine. The particle separator sits upstream of the filter and uses a vortex chamber plus an electric scavenge fan to throw heavy dust out a side port before it ever reaches the filter element. Think of the separator as a first-stage cyclone; the filter is the second-stage HEPA.

Can a high-flow filter damage my engine?

Not if it's sized to the OEM airbox and seals properly. The risk is twofold: a filter that doesn't seal lets dust around the filter and into the throttle body; a cotton-gauze filter that's over-oiled can deposit oil onto the MAF/MAP sensors. Both are install issues, not media issues. The picks above all use OEM airbox-specific sealing geometry.

Best air filter for a Polaris RZR Pro R?

S&B's Pro R 2.0L dry synthetic replacement filter. It drops into the 2.0L airbox, flows better than stock per the manufacturer, and washes clean without oil. If you ride dust heavily, S&B also publishes a Pro R-specific Particle Separator — check stock availability since it's lower-volume than the X3 or Pro XP versions.

Best air filter for a Can-Am Maverick X3?

It depends on your riding mode. For dust-heavy riding, the S&B X3 Particle Separator 2 is the right answer — 94% pre-filter separation makes the rest of the system easier. For trail-only owners, the K&N pre-oiled cotton-gauze filter is a clean drop-in. For budget builds, the Trinity Racing X3 element is washable synthetic at $72.99.

What air filter for a Maverick R?

The 2024+ Maverick R aftermarket air filter catalog is still thin. The RPM Powersports Maverick R / X3 Turbo pre-filter wrap fits both platforms as a dust-management layer, and S&B has confirmed a Maverick R Particle Separator program is in development. For now, we'd run the OEM filter with the RPM prefilter wrap and re-evaluate at the next product release cycle.

Does an S&B Particle Separator void my Polaris warranty?

Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) prevents a dealer from voiding your factory warranty simply because you installed an aftermarket part. They can only deny a warranty claim if they prove the aftermarket part directly caused the failure they're repairing. A particle separator mounted to the cage, drawing 2 to 3 amps from the pulse bus, has no path to cause an unrelated drivetrain or chassis failure.

How do I install a particle separator on a Pro R?

About 1.5 hours of work per S&B's spec sheet. The kit includes billet roll-bar clamps, the intake-tube replacement, a fan-and-power harness, and the scavenge tube. You'll route the harness to a switched pulse-bus terminal under the dash, replace the stock intake tube with the high-temp polyethylene tube provided, and mount the separator to the upper roll bars. No drilling required.

Pick the filter, then ride farther between services.
