When to Change · Quick Reference

Engine oil drives every other maintenance call. Skip an interval and you cook the top end. Here's what every manufacturer says, sourced from the owner's manual itself, no guessing.

Trigger When (hours / miles) When (calendar) Why it matters
Break-in service First 20–50 hours or 600–1,000 miles, depending on machine Within first month of riding New engines shed metal during break-in. Get that out before it cycles through bearings for the next 50 hours.
Steady-state engine oil + filter Polaris — every 50 hours / 1,000 miles. Can-Am — every 100 hours / 1,900 miles. Honda Talon — every 100 hours / 600 miles. Yamaha YXZ — every 160 hours / 1,600 miles. Kawasaki KRX — every 100 hours after the first 50. Every 12 months, whichever comes first Synthetic engine oil shears down under heat and load. Past the interval it stops protecting the bearings.
Severe-duty (mud, dust, racing, deep water) Half the steady-state interval — every 25 hours / 500 miles on a Polaris, 50 hours / 1,000 miles on a Can-Am, etc. Every 6 months Sand, water, and heat ride through the engine and contaminate oil faster. If you race or run mud, halve the interval.
Visible trigger — condition based Anytime oil reads dark brown or black on the dipstick, smells burnt, or you find debris in the drain pan Don't wait for the calendar Visible contamination = chemistry is gone. New oil costs $60, a top end costs $4,000.

The 5 Best UTV Oil Change Kits for 2026

These five kits cover the working majority of riders — Polaris RZR Pro R, Pro XP / Turbo R / XP 1000, Can-Am Maverick X3, and Can-Am Defender. Picks balance premium synthetic chemistry (Motul, Klotz) against working-rider value (Lucas Oil, WIX). For your specific machine, jump to Top Picks by Vehicle.

EVO Powersports x Motul

EVO Motul Kit — Defender, Commander, Maverick

EVO Powersports collaborated with Motul, the OEM-supplier-grade fluid brand whose 300V Race Spec is the only product their in-house race team uses on 10,000-RPM Maverick X3 race motors. The 5W-40 Race Spec kit covers Defender / Commander / Maverick on race fuel or E85; the 7100 Dune/Trail kit covers everyday riders on pump gas. Both include OEM oil filter, filter O-ring, sealing ring, gloves, and a Motul cloth. The Race Spec uses Motul's proprietary ESTER Core technology, which is what makes the oil cling to bearing surfaces under high-RPM shear — the 1L bottles are spec'd at HTHS viscosity 4.0 mPa·s at 150°C, which is what protects the engine when the dipstick reads 230°F+ in the dunes.

Pros
  • Motul 300V Race Spec is genuinely OEM-supplier-grade fluid
  • Two formulations (Race / Dune-Trail) means you pick by use, not by guess
  • OEM oil filter + crush washer + sealing ring included
  • Compatible with Defender HD7 / HD9 / HD10 + Commander + base Maverick
Cons
  • Doesn't fit the X3 (separate SKU) or the Maverick R (separate SKU)
  • Higher AOV than the Lucas-Oil-based value kits
  • Race Spec requires race fuel or E85 for full benefit

Klotz X3 Kit — Side-By-Side Specific

Klotz Synthetics doesn't make car oil. The Side-By-Side line is purpose-built for UTV duty cycles — high shear loads, wet-clutch compatibility, off-road dust ingestion, and full-throttle pulls that pass through 8,500 RPM. The X3-specific kit comes with 4 qt of Klotz 10W-40 or 10W-50 (selectable variant), the correct HiFlo HF-152 filter, and a Cometic O-ring + aluminum washer for the drain plug. It's a clean, focused kit at a price point ($78.99) that beats every dealer-counter alternative.

UTV Source · House Brand

UTV Source RZR Pro R Kit

The Pro R is the heaviest, hardest-running sport RZR in the lineup and needs the most engine oil — Polaris specs 5.5 qt at every service. Off-the-shelf RZR kits ship 4 qt and short you. Our house-brand kit ships 6 quarts of Maxima Racing Oils ATV Fully Synthetic 5W-50 (enough for the fill plus a little for top-up), plus the correct HiFlo filter. At $99.97 on sale ($119.95 retail), it's the cheapest way to get the right viscosity in the right quantity without 2-day-shipping a 7th bottle from another brand.

EVO Motul Polaris — Pro XP / Turbo R / Ranger XP 1000

One of the most versatile kits in the lineup — this Motul kit covers three of Polaris's volume sport-and-utility platforms in a single SKU. The 300V Race Spec 10W-50 is the same Motul chemistry used on EVO's race motors (high-temperature stability of 17.7 mm²/s at 100°C, viscosity index 182); the Dune/Trail 10W-50 uses Motul's ATV/SXS Power line, optimized for trail temperatures and wet-clutch compatibility. ProFilter brand oil filter is included.

  • ProFilter brand oil filter is OEM-spec
  • 10W-50 viscosity index 182 stays in grade through severe heat
Cons
  • 3-qt kit is right for Pro XP / Turbo R but undershoots if you're filling a Ranger XP 1000 to 2.5 qt with margin
  • Race Spec 300V is meant for race fuel / E85

DIY vs Shop · Cost & Time

A dealer oil change runs $150–$250 plus tax. An aftermarket service kit runs $65–$120 plus 45 minutes of your time. Here's the actual math, no PR spin.

DIY Service

  • Kit cost (premium synthetic): $80–$120
  • Tools needed: 17mm socket, oil drain pan, funnel, torque wrench
  • Time investment: 30–45 min the first time, 20 min after
  • Safety: let engine cool 30 min before draining
  • Skill level: beginner-friendly if you can use a wrench

Total · $80–$120

Dealer or Independent Shop

  • Polaris / Can-Am dealer labor rate: $120–$165/hr
  • Typical bill: $150–$250 incl. parts + tax
  • Drop-off / pickup time: 1–2 hours each way
  • Hidden upsell risk: "while we have it apart we noticed..."

Total · $150–$250

Net DIY savings: $60–$130 per service. Two services per year on a 100-hour-rider schedule, three on a 50-hour Polaris schedule. The kit pays for itself the first time and you've banked the rest.

How to Change UTV Oil in 7 Steps

Generic 7-step procedure that applies to most UTV platforms. Polaris RZR Pro R, Can-Am X3, and Honda Talon have platform-specific quirks — we call those out inline. Total time: ~45 minutes the first time.

  1. Step 1 — Warm up the engine

Run the engine for 5–10 minutes so the oil thins out and drains fully. Don't run it hot — you'll burn yourself on the drain plug. Park the machine on flat ground.

Time: 5 min · Tools: none · Safety: shut down before any work begins
  2. Step 2 — Position the drain pan

Slide a deep oil drain pan (at least 8 qt capacity) under the engine's drain plug. UTVs sit higher than cars — a low-profile pan won't catch the splash. On the X3, drain plug is on the underside of the engine block; on the Pro R, look for the labeled crush-washer drain on the case.

Time: 2 min · Tools: oil drain pan
  3. Step 3 — Remove the drain plug and drain

Use a 17mm socket (most UTVs) to crack the drain plug. Loosen by hand once the wrench breaks it free. Pull the plug straight up and let the oil drain for 5–10 minutes — longer is better, dirty oil clings to the case. Important: discard the old crush washer; ALWAYS use the new one from your kit.

Time: 10 min · Tools: 17mm socket, ratchet · Safety: oil and case will be 150°F — use gloves
  4. Step 4 — Remove the old oil filter

Wrap a rag around the filter (it's full of oil that wants to go everywhere) and twist it off by hand. If it won't budge, use a filter wrench. Catch the spillover in the drain pan. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean with the included shop cloth before installing the new one.

Time: 5 min · Tools: filter wrench (sometimes), shop cloth · Safety: filter will be 150°F — use gloves
  5. Step 5 — Install the new filter

Smear a small amount of fresh oil from your kit on the new filter's rubber gasket — this lets it seat properly without binding. Thread the filter on by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface, then tighten 3/4 turn more. Don't over-torque — it's hand-tight plus 3/4 turn, not "as tight as I can."

Time: 3 min · Tools: hands · Safety: never over-torque a filter, you'll crush the gasket
  6. Step 6 — Reinstall drain plug with new washer

Install the new crush washer / O-ring from your kit. Thread the drain plug back in by hand to avoid cross-threading. Torque to the spec in your owner's manual — most UTVs are 18–25 ft-lbs. Honda Talon takes 2 drain plugs (engine + transmission) and 2 different washers — don't mix them up.

Time: 3 min · Tools: torque wrench · Safety: cross-threading the drain plug is the #1 way to crack an engine case
  7. Step 7 — Fill with fresh oil and verify level

Pull the oil cap on top of the engine. Use the funnel to pour in the correct quantity for your machine: Pro R 5.5 qt, X3 4 qt, Pro XP / Turbo R 2.5 qt, Ranger XP 1000 2.5 qt, Talon 7 qt, YXZ 5 qt, KRX 4 qt. Start the engine for 30 seconds, shut down, wait 2 minutes, check the dipstick. Top up to the cross-hatch mark. Done.

Time: 7 min · Tools: funnel · Safety: never run engine without oil — even 30 seconds dry will damage bearings

Disposal: Used motor oil is hazardous waste. Don't pour it on the ground or into a stormwater drain. Most auto parts retailers (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance) accept used oil and used filters for free recycling. Bring it in the original kit's 4–6 qt bottles — reuse the empties as a transport container.

Common UTV Oil Change Questions

How often should I change UTV oil?

The interval depends on your manufacturer. Polaris specs every 50 hours / 1,000 miles for the RZR and Ranger family. Can-Am specs every 100 hours / 1,900 miles for the Maverick X3 and Defender. Honda Talon is roughly 100 hours / 600 miles. Yamaha YXZ is the longest at 160 hours / 1,600 miles. Kawasaki KRX is every 100 hours after the first 50-hour break-in service.

All five brands also recommend a 12-month calendar interval — whichever comes first. If you ride in mud, dust, sand, or race conditions, cut the steady-state interval in half. The owner's manual is the source of truth for your specific model year.

What oil should I use in my Polaris RZR?

Polaris specs 5W-50 across the RZR Pro R, Pro XP, XP Turbo, Turbo R, XP 1000, and Ranger XP 1000 platforms. The factory-fill is Polaris PS-4 5W-50, but aftermarket synthetic 5W-50 from Maxima, Klotz, Motul, Lucas Oil, or AMSOIL meets the same JASO MA2 spec and works identically.

For a Pro R specifically, the fill quantity is 5.5 quarts — more than most off-the-shelf kits ship. The UTV Source Pro R kit was built specifically to fill the 5.5 qt spec without scrambling for a 7th bottle.

What's the best synthetic oil for a Can-Am Maverick X3?

The X3's 900cc Rotax turbo specs 5W-40 viscosity. For premium synthetic, the EVO Powersports Motul 300V Race Spec 5W-40 is the chemistry that EVO uses on their in-house race motors — it's overkill for trail riding but bulletproof if you run race fuel or E85. For everyday riding, Klotz X3 SXS 10W-40 / 10W-50 (selectable) is purpose-built for X3 duty cycles. For value, the SuperATV Can-Am Up & Running kit with Lucas Oil 10W-50 is the lowest-cost full-synthetic option.

Don't use car oil in the X3. Car oils don't have JASO MA2 friction modifiers, which the X3's clutch internals are designed around.

Can I use car oil in my UTV?

No, and the why matters. Car engine oils are formulated for dry-sump engines with dedicated transmissions. UTV engines share oil between the engine, transmission, and (in many designs) the wet clutch. UTV-spec oils carry the JASO MA2 certification, which means the friction modifiers are tuned so the wet clutch grabs correctly instead of slipping. Car oil with energy-conserving (EC) labels actively makes the clutch slip.

Use SXS-specific oils (Maxima ATV/SXS, Klotz Side-By-Side, Motul ATV/SXS Power or 300V, Lucas SXS, AMSOIL ATV/UTV). They're all JASO MA2-rated and built for the duty cycle.

Do I need to change the gear oil too?

Yes, but on a different interval. Engine oil is the most-frequent service (50–100 hours). Front and rear differential gear oil is typically every 500 hours, plus an inspection at break-in. Transaxle / transmission fluid varies by platform — the Maverick R 7-speed DCT is the most demanding (separate driveline kit required), the Polaris automatic CVT is the least.

This page covers engine oil change kits specifically. For differential and transaxle service, check the platform-specific accessories hub or the OEM service manual. The Maverick R driveline kit is sold separately from the engine kit for this reason.

How much oil does a RZR Pro R hold?

The Pro R holds 5.5 quarts of 5W-50 per Polaris's published service manual. This is more than every other RZR in the lineup — the Pro XP, Turbo R, and XP 1000 all hold ~2.5 quarts. Most off-the-shelf RZR kits ship 4 quarts, which leaves you 1.5 quarts short for a Pro R service.

The UTV Source Pro R kit ships 6 quarts of Maxima 5W-50 specifically to cover this gap with a small margin for top-up.

What viscosity oil for a turbo UTV?

The viscosity is set by the manufacturer, not by whether the engine is turbocharged. Polaris specs 5W-50 across both naturally aspirated (Pro R) and turbocharged (Pro XP, Turbo R, XP Turbo) platforms. Can-Am specs 5W-40 across naturally aspirated (Defender 1000) and turbocharged (X3 Turbo, Maverick R) engines. Honda Talon and Kawasaki KRX both spec 10W-40. Yamaha YXZ specs 15W-50.

The viscosity you pick by hand should always match the OEM spec. Going lighter on viscosity (5W-30 instead of 5W-50) hurts bearing protection at high RPM; going heavier (10W-60 instead of 5W-50) sometimes hurts cold-start oil flow.

Is Maxima oil better than AMSOIL for UTV?

Both are JASO MA2-certified, both come in matched UTV viscosities, both pass the same shear and oxidation tests. Maxima has a longer history in the powersports race ecosystem (their Maxima Racing Oils ATV line is what stocks many Polaris factory dealer service bays). AMSOIL has stronger market presence in the consumer aftermarket and slightly more SKU coverage across vehicle platforms.

The honest answer: pick by SKU availability and price for your specific machine, not by brand allegiance. Both are competent professional-grade fluids.

Can I use Mobil 1 in my Polaris Ranger?

Mobil 1 makes a powersports-specific 4T MX line that carries the JASO MA2 spec, and that variant is fine for a Polaris Ranger XP 1000. Their standard automotive Mobil 1 line is NOT JASO MA2-rated and is not the right product for a UTV with a wet clutch.

If you buy Mobil 1, verify the label reads "4T MX" or "Powersports" and that it carries the JASO MA2 specification. Otherwise, stick to the SXS-specific brands (Maxima, Klotz, Motul, Lucas SXS, AMSOIL ATV/UTV).

Does using an aftermarket oil change kit void my OEM warranty?

No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (1975) is a U.S. federal law that prevents a manufacturer from voiding a warranty solely because the owner used aftermarket parts, AS LONG AS the aftermarket parts meet the manufacturer's published specifications.

In practice: if you use a kit with the manufacturer-specified viscosity (5W-50 for Polaris, 5W-40 for Can-Am, etc.), an OEM-quality oil filter (HiFlo, WIX, ProFilter, etc.), and you follow the published service interval, your warranty stays intact. A dealer who refuses warranty service because you used Klotz or Motul instead of the OEM-branded oil is on the wrong side of the law.
