Nestled in the heart of the Arizona desert, Lake Havasu beckons adventurers with its rugged landscapes, picturesque vistas, and a variety of trails. For off-road enthusiasts, there's no better way to experience the beauty of this region than behind the wheel of a capable high-performance Side by Side vehicle. We got the chance to do just that and turned just under 100 miles on a low-hour 2024 Polaris RZR XP 4 1000 Ultimate.
Unleashing the RZR XP 1000 Ultimate
Before we dive into the trails, let's take a moment to appreciate the marvel that is the RZR XP 1000. The model we had the keys to was a bone stock RZR XP 4 Ultimate in Matte Titanium / Onyx Black. Vehicle driveline specifications include a powerful 999cc 4-Stroke DOHC twin-cylinder engine boasting 114 hp, and the Automatic PVT transmission.

Conquering the Desert Terrain Of Lake Havasu
There is no doubt the Lake Havasu, Arizona region is a destination for year-round visitors. Snowbirds in the winter, spring breakers, and summertime watersports enthusiasts all find the area appealing. The desert terrain is another wonderful attraction that is big business for both residents and visitors.

Having only been to Havasu twice, and never for off-roading adventures, I was quite unfamiliar with the lay of the land. I leaned heavily on the OnX off-road app to get a sense of where to be and how to get there. I also was sporting my handy Spot X 2-way messenger to drop waypoints and send out notes when I had no cell service.

Once I hit the trails around Lake Havasu, I quickly discovered the true capabilities of the RZR XP 1000 Ultimate. From navigating rocky trails to blasting up sandy hillsides, this machine handled it all with precision and control. Thanks to its high-clearance A-arms and ground clearance, we were tackling obstacles with confidence, knowing the RZR was up to the challenge.
Just In Case
Since we were flying solo, running stock, and light and lean with no spares, I packed the gear and essentials I had on hand. My motto for any off-road adventure is to prepare for all conditions and it is better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. Here was my short list of items I brought along:
SpeedStrap 1" SuperStrap Weavable Recovery Strap
Slime Tire Repair Smart Spair Flat Tire Repair Kit
Rugged Radios R1 Business Band Handheld Radio
Johnny on the spot with the BOXO USA Offroad Tool Bag, just in case.
Exploring Lake Havasu's Off-Road Trail Destinations
One of the highlights of exploring Lake Havasu's off-road trails is the diverse range of landscapes to encounter. There are a plethora of routes that cater to all levels of enthusiasts. From sprawling desert vistas to rugged mountains, each trail offers its own unique blend of challenges and scenery. With the RZR XP 1000 Ultimate as our trusty steed, we ventured off the beaten path and explored several hidden gems in the surrounding area.
Here is a closer look at some of the top trail destinations around Lake Havasu:
1. Standard Wash Trail: This trail offers a scenic journey through the desert landscape, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Havasu. The relatively easy terrain makes it perfect for beginners or those looking for a leisurely ride.
2. Havasu Heights Trail: For those seeking a more challenging off-road experience, the Havasu Heights Trail offers steep climbs and rocky terrain that will put your skills to the test. The reward? Sweeping views of Lake Havasu and the surrounding desert landscape.

3. Red Line Trail: Red Line is mostly a long series of short, steep hills with enough obstacles thrown in to keep it interesting. It gives you a sampling of the region’s terrain and takes you out just far enough without leaving you too exposed if something goes wrong. If you do the whole loop expect to be on the trail for 5 hours.
Rolling hills make for fun trails and good rippers.
4. McCraken Rockhouse Cabin: This is a big one. Just a short 57-mile trail, there and back, that is a long way from anywhere. It runs along the south part of Alamo Road and you will want to bring extra fuel and water on this run. Expect some Arizona pinstriping in the rarely used arroyo trails but the payoff is interesting mining artifacts and old settlements that you will not see anywhere else.
5. Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge (Cattail Cove): This is a protected area not designated for off-road vehicle use, but there are permitted off-road routes nearby such as the Cattail Cove trail. Nature lovers will delight in the chance to spot wildlife along the trails of this pristine refuge. From desert bighorn sheep to migratory birds, there's no shortage of wildlife to observe in this beautiful natural setting.

Experiencing The Ultimate Adventure
As we navigated some of these winding trails and steep inclines, the RZR XP 1000 Ultimate, in its stock form, proved time and time again why it's one capable off-road machine. With its responsive handling and high-performance True On-Demand AWD/2WD drive system we felt on top of the world conquering one obstacle after another. Sometimes pushing the limits at speed over tricky and uneven terrain, I perhaps tested myself more than the machine.
For us, it was only 100 miles of non-stop ultimate off-road adventures, but there is a lot more to un-tap and explore around the area. Our Polaris certainly delivered and it was great to have a reliable machine. Even for seasoned off-road veterans, the RZR XP 1000 Ultimate was a true experience.
How To Make Good Great!
A stock UTV is more than adequate, but the thriving pool of aftermarket accessories can transform a basic machine into a platform that take the adventures to the next level. If I had the option to hook up five upgrades for this machine, I would start with taller and more high-performance tires. A set of Atturo Tires Trail Blade X/T SXS Series UTV Tires in 33x10.15 would do the trick and definitely hold up to rocks and harsh terrain we encountered.
Next, I would want to extend the fuel range. I found the limit of the vehicle’s stock 9.5 gallon fuel tank capacity was just about 100 miles. To increase that, I would opt for AGM’s Products EXR Polaris RZR Fuel Tank that adds an additional 8 gallons.
Since, we are aiming to hit extended high-mileage trails, I would very much want to carry a spare tire. One of the best options available to do that is the SDR Motorsports RZR XP Rear Adventure Rack and would be the deluxe setup. If we are sitting up for double the seat time, it would be prudent to consider comfort. A set of PRP XC UTV 1" Extra Wide Suspension Seats would take care of that nicely.
Finally, another aspect lacking on our unit was any type of rear view mirror. Even though I was using proper hand signals, it was somewhat nerve racking driving all over town on the roads in traffic. To cure that, the Assault Industries Shreddy B2C Convex Side Mirrors would keep us out of trouble.
